I remember being nominated in high school and thinking it was the coolest thing. Someone noticed that I had done a lot of theatre and played sports. Someone thought I was cool enough to be on this list. Looking back, I think that was just my insecurity speaking and me needing affirmation that I belonged. It is clear that times have changed and the internet has allowed us to label people on a daily basis (and to do so anonymously). I find myself split down the middle here, trapped between fond memories of my own high school career and seeing this generation living a very different reality. I do agree that it is either all or nothing. Either award people for all the things, or save the awards for the serious moments and high achievements and leave the lists and the popularity contests for the chap snat!

This is a great article, both of you had strong points. Well Done!

I definitely agree that homecoming, prom and senior star awards are just popularity contests. There’s no doubt in my mind that the most popular kids are going to win homecoming queen and king this year. And this year someone may feel bad about not winning, but what all of us really need to remember is that none of this matters in a couple of months. After we all graduate, none of it will matter, no one will care who got the crown on prom night, and no one will care if you did something embarrassing. It’s all going to be gone in a matter of months, so stop caring, and do what you wanna do, y’know?

    • We don’t often consider that for many of us, with every step we take, there is someone else walking in a different direction without the same privileges. We can’t erase our privilege, but we can use it for good, and examining diversity in animation is a good place to start.
