The annual Huskie Halloween costume contest sponsored in conjunction with the PN Senate and The Northern Light is traditionally a highlight of the fall season, and this year did not disappoint.
Over 50 staff and students participated, and winners were chosen in the following categories:
Scariest: Monica Mastin
“My costume was my take on a grim reaper/ Lady Death type of character. I was originally planning to dress up with a friend as characters from a game we both really like, but plans fell through at the last minute, so I was scrambling for something I could pull off with minimal planning,” Mastin shared. “The idea came to me when I remembered that a video essayist I like had painted half of her face to look like a skull for one of her videos. I thought it looked really cool, and was something I could replicate well enough. I bought face paint the day before Halloween, but it didn’t dry the way I needed, so I had to switch my sister’s white eyeliner for the white of the bone. The rest of the costume consisted of clothes I already owned, a black robe I borrowed from a friend, and accessories/jewelry hastily bought from Spirit Halloween and Spencers. In the end, I love how the costume turned out, especially the makeup, even if I couldn’t really move my face with it on (lunch was a struggle).”
Funniest: Will Martin
“My costume was a huge, inflatable baby,” Martin said. “The funniest thing about it is that I couldn’t even wear it all day because it was big and also really hot, so I really only wore it for the picture.”
Most Creative: Leah Kusisto
“My costume was an Annis Hag, a creature from the game Dungeons & Dragons,” Kusisto explained. “It took me about 4-5 days to make. My favorite physical part of my costume was the hunchback (I actually had a bigger version at home that I couldn’t wear to school), but my favorite actual part was trick or treating in it with my friends!”
Best Group: Percy Busha, Rachel Anderson, Ellie Alleman, Caely Floria
“There were 4 of us (all Juniors) in my group,” Anderson said. “We had not planned to coordinate our costumes, but we all happened to dress up as pirates (for the most part, Percy was Mothman who became the pirates’ nemesis). I got the idea of being a pirate from a book I enjoyed, Daughter of the Pirate King by Tricia Levenseller. I bought the parts for my costume around town, However, Percy hand-made their entire costume starting during spring break last school year! My favorite part was how accidental our coordination was.”
Staff: the ESI department
“I was already doing a family Halloween and we were all Inside Out characters,” said ESI teacher Nicole Ailes. “So I suggested since I already had the Anxiety costume we could do it! Then I brought in a couple costumes from my family to share with others. At lunch one day a few of us just brainstormed who would be who, but really any of us could be any emotion since we use them all!”
