Huskies game of the week

Football at Niles

Andrew Stone, Staff Writer

PORTAGE NORTHERN 49 NILES 6

at Niles, Michigan

WHAT HAPPENED: From the very start, Portage Northern (7-2) dominated both facets of the game. Once again, Northern’s defense carried them with 5 interceptions and would not allow a touchdown until the 3rd quarter. The offense picked up where they left off last week and never left the game in doubt with a running clock implemented in the 3rd quarter.

THE GOOD: After exploding for 46 points against Benton Harbor on Senior Night, Northern’s offense picked up right where they left off. Quarterbacks Riley Bell and Blake Therrian combined for 166 passing yards while Northern running backs rushed for 144 combined. Daryn Snow led receivers with 88 yards and a touchdown.

STAR OF THE GAME: Josh Leiter (19 rushes, 87 yards, 4.6 avg/yards, 5 touchdowns)

UP NEXT: In the 1st round of the playoffs, Portage Northern will travel to Battle Creek Lakeview to take on the  9-0 Spartans from the SMAC East. Lakeview had crossover games with Niles and Benton Harbor from the West, and they handled the East easily winning every game by more than 19 points. Look for this to be a close, defensive battle.
